  • The ever-arrogant Apple « Observatory
    I admit to coming off like a bit of an Apple fanboy, but still, this piece really nailed something for me: if Apple are sometimes arrogant (and I don't think there's a dispute about whether or not they are) then it's because they've earned the right to be by leading the way in personal computing on a technology level for decades now. They may not have been the most successful financially, but they've been the game changing-innovators since before the iPod, never mind the iPhone and iPad. And if someone comes along that can humble them, then I will sincerely welcome them but it hasn't happened yet. The reason I buy Apple products is that they're the best on sale at the moment, and as soon as someone comes along that offers me a better experience, I'll switch.

    I'm a little fucked off about this, but not quite willing to throw my toys from the pram over it – not least because I can't, having just signed up for another 18 months. But it's one to keep an eye on, and one to be professionally aware of, at least, as more clients start asking up for iPhone/iPad tailored content.

  • What Could Have Been Entering the Public Domain on January 1, 2010?
    Thought it was worth pointing this one out, as there's bound to be another round of copyright extension lobbying fairly soon – when isn't there? Here's a list of what could have been public domain today, were it not for the 1976 extension. Can you find an argument for any of these works not being in the public domain now?

    For all I make jokes about being a "good protestant boy", in the years since the Good Friday Agreement, I had more or less come to believe that a united Ireland was a good and desirable thing – the British have unquestionably fucked the place for centuries, and eventually the majority opinion in the North is going to be in favour of a united Ireland. That was until today, when I discovered that Ireland have enacted a law forbidding blasphemy. That's so fucking retrograde it's unreal, and genuinely makes me concerned about a united Ireland again.     SLight annoying french spelling aside – if their iphone app is half as nice as their web app, and if they expose an api at some point soon, then I think Things may have been supplanted as my favourite to-do list manager. This is bloody lovely.

  • Facebook's New Privacy Changes: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly | Electronic Frontier Foundation (via JWZ)
    Essentially: whenever any of your friends posts an app, the developer of that app get all the data about *you* that they have access to. Facebook have completely fucked your privacy in the bin. I will be deleting my account at the end of the month, if they don't change it. (The only reason I'm not deleting it *today* is that I don't want to fuck people's social planning in the bin.) For refernce, after a bit of digging about in the privacy settings, despite the fact that I have my privacy locked down, under the new settings, here's what my friends were authorised to share about me, regardless of my profile settings: Personal info (activities, interests, etc.), Status udates,Online presence,Website,Family and relationship,Education and work,My videos,My links,My Notes,My photos,Photos and videos of me,About me,My birthday,My hometown. These setting were buried, and required extra password validaton to alter – they had gone out their way to make it hard. I'm done with them.

    Oooh. Proper, attractive fonts for your website. OK, it'll set you back 25-50 dollars a year, and I bet most people will still set their font sizes far too small, but at least I can use it to make prettier things now.
