- Learn HTML & CSS – a book that teaches you in a nicer way
If anyone I know is looking to learn HTML and CSS, or even just improve a shaky grasp of it, then I really can't recommend this beautiful book enough. Too many build your own website books are both too technical, and too hideous. This book is starts from absolute first principles, and is a joy to look at. I don't need it, and I'm still thinking of buying it, that's how nice it is.

Really want to check this out proper like, and maybe build something using it. I've kept on promising myself a custom-designer blog for years, but have never gotten around to it. Maybe now's the time.

I was able to opt out of using Facebook when I didn't like their privacy settings. I welcome any suggestions on how to avoid using Google products. At this point, I'm just consoling myself with the thought that the company will probably be dead (or at least, much reduced) within the next 10-15 years, and I'm just hoping they don't damage our norms around privacy too much along the way.

The BBC it seems, refuse to learn lessons from their own history. I'm usually one to defend the BBC against a lot of the flak it gets, but this is just plain stupid. Archiving these sites should be a matter of maybe an hour's work each, at most.

I have been reflecting of late that I could do with adjusting my morning routine a bit. A lot of what's in here is moderately standard hippy crap, but the annoying thing is that I know quite a lot of it works, if one sticks to it. So I should probably get on that.

If you live in the UK, stop what you're doing and read this, assuming you haven't already. This is somewhere between absurd and terrifying, and I simply don't understand how anyone in Cameron's position can contemplate it. Well, I do, but the only way it makes sense to me is active malice and contempt for other people, which is a motivation I find hard to ascribe to any human being.

Well, I've never fallen in the HDR hole – I think it's a cheap effect, a way to get around weaknesses in technique, or a substitute for an actual idea – but on the other hand, I've taken so few photos I like in the last year, it's ridiculous. But that is less about my ability, and more about the fact that I haven't been carrying a camera enough, or taking enough pics. Time to do something about that.

I feel like I know almost no-one round where I live, but still: I shop regularly at my local butcher. A couple of my local cafe’s recognise me when I come in. I like that, and I’d hate to live in the world described here.

Handy set of tools for producing grad based designs. I particularly like the fact that there’s both an OmniGraffle template and an HTML demo. This is going to make going from wireframe to mockup about 70 times faster.

Nice, minimalist photoblog theme. Might use it as a start point for sprucing up my portfolio site, to bring it more into line with the design of my other sites.
