Jess Nevins is crowdfunding his next volume of stupendous cultural research. I own his Encyclopaedia of Fantastic Victoriana, and it is *brilliant*, as well as being large enough and heavy enough to stop a charging rhinoceros. No, I'm serious. I've actually used it to do that. Anyway: you should fund this. And even if it doesn't sound like your sort of thing, you should fund it on my behalf, because I'm sick of not being able to fund things on Kickstarter thanks to amazon's fuckery. Someone pay Jess on my behalf.

Likely of no interest to non-webdev-nerds, but potentially of enormous value to me, in terms of learning new languages. I sort of vaguely know Ruby, but this direct translation from PHP to Ruby would speed what little ruby hacking I do.

I wanted to link to this not because it's directly relevant to me (other than, y'know, as a human being with an ounce of compassion somewhere under a rock in here), or even because it's an exceptionally horrible story (it is, but the plain truth is that worse things happen every day, and I don't link to news about them), but just because it strikes me as a very, very stark reminder of how, even in the "developed" world, we still have such a very very long way to go before we can call ourselves civilised.

Thought it was worth pointing this one out, as there's bound to be another round of copyright extension lobbying fairly soon – when isn't there? Here's a list of what could have been public domain today, were it not for the 1976 extension. Can you find an argument for any of these works not being in the public domain now?

For all I make jokes about being a "good protestant boy", in the years since the Good Friday Agreement, I had more or less come to believe that a united Ireland was a good and desirable thing – the British have unquestionably fucked the place for centuries, and eventually the majority opinion in the North is going to be in favour of a united Ireland. That was until today, when I discovered that Ireland have enacted a law forbidding blasphemy. That's so fucking retrograde it's unreal, and genuinely makes me concerned about a united Ireland again. Oh, look, you all know what I'm going to say by now. I'll just restate this: free/cheap public connectivity is far more important to Britain's future prosperity than the existing business models of the content industry are, and cases like this endanger that connectivity. I would like it very much if we stopped fighting the future because of a short term threat to the wallets of some rich people, and got on with embracing it so that we can have all new rich people.

I know that this is just words. It's an easy thing to say, and it costs him nothing. Of course it was bound to happen. But still: it has taken such a very long time for it to be said, and it is absolutely right that it should be said. And as cynical as I am about politics and politicians, it still makes me happy when they do something that I agree with 100%, however easy and simple it is. And it's this simple "we’re sorry, you deserved so much better."
