- Janet Fitch's 10 rules for writers | Jacket Copy | Los Angeles Times
Actually, these aren't half bad, and if I could make more of an effort to remember them, it'd probably lift my writing quite a lot.
- Wayward Alzheimer's patients foiled by fake bus stop – Telegraph
Architectures of control, right here. Nice.
- The ever-arrogant Apple « Observatory
I admit to coming off like a bit of an Apple fanboy, but still, this piece really nailed something for me: if Apple are sometimes arrogant (and I don't think there's a dispute about whether or not they are) then it's because they've earned the right to be by leading the way in personal computing on a technology level for decades now. They may not have been the most successful financially, but they've been the game changing-innovators since before the iPod, never mind the iPhone and iPad. And if someone comes along that can humble them, then I will sincerely welcome them but it hasn't happened yet. The reason I buy Apple products is that they're the best on sale at the moment, and as soon as someone comes along that offers me a better experience, I'll switch.
- Stuart Roebuck: Mobile Proxy Cache content modification by O2
I'm a little fucked off about this, but not quite willing to throw my toys from the pram over it – not least because I can't, having just signed up for another 18 months. But it's one to keep an eye on, and one to be professionally aware of, at least, as more clients start asking up for iPhone/iPad tailored content.

- Abandoned London – a set on Flickr
I am so tempted to skip out on family Christmas next year, and produce a set something like this. OK, there's not a chance I would, but still, the set pretty damn impressive anyway.
- English Russia » Abandoned Russian Polar Nuclear Lighthouses (via Warren Ellis)
Like everyone else, I'd never heard of these before. And like all right-thinking people, I do think the entire notion is fascinating. Mouldering hulks of poisonous stone that no longer light up the night. Perfect fodder for a maritime ghost story.
- Photojojo » Sensor Dust Is Evil. Here’s How to Banish It.
Good round up of various cleaning options to remove sensor dust. My old D70s body is a martyr to it, and the D80 is bound to pick up some at some point.
- British Weather Terms
Some interesting old terms in here I hadn;'t run across before that might be useful in the future.

Not really much to say about this, other than that there are some very nice typefaces in here.
- Rails Worst Practices: 13 Coding Nightmares You Should Avoid
Ostensibly for Rails, but most of these apply to anyone using an MVC framework, and are worth a look.
- Long URL Please | Lengthening short urls so that you don't have to
This is a pet peeve of mine: people who use tinyUrl type services completely needlessly in blog posts and the like. I understand why, say, twitter does it, because of character limits, but it's still shit practice. URLs should clearly indicate the content they are the URL for. So I'll be plugging this in to my browser.
- Ecofont
This is an interesting idea – a more environmentally sound font, but will it have any actual impact on ink use at small sizes? I couldn't find any actual maths on the site. Also, I am a slave to Helvetica, and particularly Helvetica Neue, so until someone produces an ecofont variant on them, I don't see myself picking this up.
- LiveJournal deletes 'about a dozen' jobs | The Social – CNET News
Can we all please just move on from this now there's some accurate reportage about it?

Than fuck. I hate not having a proper path in my finder windows.
- Johnny Chung Lee – Projects – Wii
It occurs to me that I own a Wiimote, but no Wii. Using it to turn my Mac screen into a multitouch surface might be fun. As long as, y'know, I use a pen and not my fingers. I'm not a client, after all. I don't need to do fingers-on-the-screen rubbish.
