- 25 Abandoned Yugoslavia Monuments that look like they're from the Future
Why are all of these not arranged within convenient walking distance of my house? They are utterly brilliant bits of work.
- Workers leaving the googleplex
A story about how someone got fired from Google for being curious about his fellow employees. One might almost think that Google didn't want it getting out that they appear to be making use of minimum wage labour, and treating them worse than they treat all their other employees. That might make them look like they don't care if they're evil or not.

Self hosted delicious clone. Might move to this if I get time to play with it a bit.
- 2010 in photos
The Big Picture's pictures of the year are out – this is a link to part 1 – you'll find links to parts two and three below the picks. Beautiful, alarming, saddening, touching, all the usual. Well worth a squint.

I imagine this one will be doing the rounds today.
- Kupenga Kwa Hamlet at Oval House Theatre 16th November to 4th December
I am told that this is "An exhilarating re-telling of the classic story of betrayal and vengeance, told by two outstanding, award-winning Zimbabwean performers using music, dance and a fusion of traditional African storytelling with contemporary Township Theatre practice. Fast, powerful, moving and unlike any other Shakespeare you have ever seen." I'm planning on going. Anyone else?
- Osborne will escape public wrath if Labour lets him win the blame game | Jonathan Freedland | Comment is free | The Guardian
Good piece on the importance of the blame game in today's cuts. Remember: it is not Labour who is responsible for these cuts. If you are disposed to blame someone other than the current government, I suggest you blame the bankers. And if you are disposed to suggest that they should have been more heavily regulated, then, well, I agree with you. And I suggest you ask yourself how the Conservative party of the time argued they should have been regulated. (Hint: it was not more heavily.)
- london futures | images that bring ideas to life and frame the climate change debate in a way that everyone can understand
Will have to try and get to the Museum of London to see this.

- the creative internet (106 things)
Possibly the single biggest and most interesting time-suck I've seen on the internet to date. I've run across a lot of these things before, individually, and the ones I know are very awesome, which makes me think the rest of them will be too. One to sit down with when you've got time to spare, and want to be blow away by the artistic cleverness of others.
- Gay Sex vs. Straight Sex « OkTrends
I adore OKTrends (OKCupid's stats analysis blog) out all measure. Especially when they prove bigots wrong with y'know, actual facts.

Photography heatmaps for various cities – things tourist take photos of compared to locals. Fascinating stuff.

- Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking
On the one hand: I would cook almost nothing from this. And it is hugely, hugely expensive. On the other hand: it looks utterly fucking beautiful. I've never cooked anything from my Fat Duck book, either, but I love it…
- Company presses your ashes into vinyl when you die
This is utterly brilliant. If I haven't decided where I want to be scattered when I die, then I want this done. Completely superb.
- Steve Jobs Is Watching You: Apple Seeking to Patent Spyware | Electronic Frontier Foundation
This has done the rounds over the last week. Yes, I am profoundly annoyed about this. Yes, were it another company, I would probably be saying "well, I'm going to stop using their products" over this. And when Apple produce products that actively use this patent or similar technologies, I will avoid using them, and/or seek ways to circumvent them. Just, y'know, so we're clear that yes, I worry about the privacy-infringing moves of companies I like, too.

- The Pac-Man Dossier
This has been doing the rounds, so you may well already have seen it. But in the event that you haven't, here's a fascinatingly in-depth look at Pac-Man – you may think it's a very simply game, and it is, but its very simplicity masks an awful lot of very subtle design decisions that are key to understanding the tactics required to win.

I haven't looked in the photojojo store in ages. There is a truly staggering amount of stuff in here that I really want. Just sayin'
- BBC News – Superheroes 'poor role models for boys'
Something that's been at the back of my mind recently: good fictional role models for boys.
- Voogle Wireless
Someone has dug up the add in support of net neutrality that Google produced 4 years ago. Now, I'm the first to admit that that what was true 4 years ago isn't automatically true today, and that people who can't change their minds about things in response to changing circumstance and new arguments are stupid people. But: I don't see that the circumstances and arguments in this particular case have shifted in that period.

Actually, really true. There are absolutely hordes of ties in here that I would actually wear. Astonishing.
- Mike Marcus – Contemporary Artist and Photographer
This guy is offering ten quid portrait photography to, essentially, passers-by, so that everyone can have a decent profile pic on any on-line service they care to use it on. Wish I'd thought of this. And also that I wasn't a total bag of arse at portrait photography.
- Mule Design Studio’s Blog: Tips On Buying Design
This is, frankly excellent. It can be boiled down to: expect to pay money, so have an idea how much you can afford. And also, be absolutely sure that you actually need to buy design, rather than doing it yourself, or buying off the shelf. I've had a half written post on selecting an agency in my queue for a while, and this has obviated my need to write it quite nicely.

- Why it's never too late to be a lesbian | Life and style | The Guardian
Fascinating article on the fluidity of sexuality – the idea that people, particularly women, can, in fact, switch from hetero- to homo-sexuality in different phases of their life – that it's possible to be sincerely heterosexual, and then later, sincerely homosexual without ever being bisexual, and without devaluing one's previous sexuality.

I laughed like a drain.
- Bookshelf Porn
I love my iPad – I'm carrying so many books around with me these days, and it is very liberating. But I also love my bookshelves. One day, I hope to have space for my books, but I accept that this may be a fools dream, and I may have to resign myself to an iPad-based future. In the meantime, I shall stare at this with envy.
- danah boyd | apophenia » MySpace and Facebook: How Racist Language Frames Social Media (and Why You Should Care)
I've been following boyd's research for a few years now, and have been particularly interested in her data regarding class/race/gender divides in social media use, and I really hope the rallying cry that she's putting out here has some effect, because I would really like to see people stop arguing over the scope the problem, and start talking about what can be done about it. "On the internet, no-one knows you're a dog" is both a triumph *and* a tragedy, and we need to start addressing that.

- Osborne's first Budget? It's wrong, wrong, wrong! – UK Politics, UK – The Independent
|I imagine a few of you have seen this, but still: a nobel prizewinning economist delivers his verdict on George Osborne's benefit. Now, I imagine that a few of you are thinking "well, he's obviously got a bias". Yeah, probably true. But he's also got a fistful of examples, and I don't know about you, but I was always taught that a persuasive point was one that was backed up with examples.
- Young photojournalist detained for army cadet pics – British Journal of Photography
Good to see that the police in Romford have paid attention to their own guidelines on how to deal with photojournalists. Oh, no, wait, that's not what they've done, is it? They've done the other thing, haven't they? FFS.
