- McSweeney's Internet Tendency: Our Daughter Isn't a Selfish Brat; Your Son Just Hasn't Read "Atlas Shrugged".
"The thing is, in this family we take the philosophies of Ayn Rand seriously. We conspicuously reward ourselves for our own hard work, we never give to charity, and we only pay our taxes very, very begrudgingly. "
- Cyberoptix TieLab: hand silkscreened TIES THAT DON'T SUCK!
Actually, really true. There are absolutely hordes of ties in here that I would actually wear. Astonishing.
- Mike Marcus – Contemporary Artist and Photographer
This guy is offering ten quid portrait photography to, essentially, passers-by, so that everyone can have a decent profile pic on any on-line service they care to use it on. Wish I'd thought of this. And also that I wasn't a total bag of arse at portrait photography.
- Mule Design Studio’s Blog: Tips On Buying Design
This is, frankly excellent. It can be boiled down to: expect to pay money, so have an idea how much you can afford. And also, be absolutely sure that you actually need to buy design, rather than doing it yourself, or buying off the shelf. I've had a half written post on selecting an agency in my queue for a while, and this has obviated my need to write it quite nicely.

- Marco.org – How to post photos on the internet
I don't think I'm too guilty of these. Generally, I've only done one or two of these things to a photo. Honest.
- Clegg lays down law to Cameron on gay rights – UK Politics, UK – The Independent
Wow. This is an excellent move. Certainly it's making me seriously consider voting for them.
- Official Google Blog: A new approach to China
You're bound to see/have seen this one all over the place today. Still worth logging, and very, very impressive of Google to do it. Will be interesting to see what the outcome shakes out to be, although I suspect I can guess… Also, obviously, this is a massively concerning thing that China is doing, and well, fingers crossed it'll stop with exposure, although again….

Yeah. And *this* is exactly why I stopped giving them any more data. Creepy as fuck.
- Derailing for Dummies
Ever done any of these things in an internet argument? Yeah, well, me too. Let's just put it behind us, and try and be better people from now on, eh?
- Sex objects: Pictures shift men's view of women | Science | guardian.co.uk
Apparently looking at lots of porn really *isn't* healthy for human relationships. Who knew?

"I'm making a list and checking it twice. Ha! Fuck that. Drinking and playing it by ear." "I like how everyone thinks Rudolph did shit. Fact. Rudolph is an oh-look-at-me-I-have-a-red-nose diva fuck." and similar gems.

- Alex's Stuff – Why web design sucks in '09
Look, I know I go on a lot about IE, and most of you are sick of it, but the gods honest truth is that using IE actively stifles innovation on the internet, because we have to spend so much time working out how to support it that we don't have the time or budget to get on with anything really interesting. Until Microsoft either take the web seriously enough to implement some proper fucking standards, then using IE is actively hindering the rest of us getting on with inventing the future. Even if you don't care about viruses, please stop it, or urge the people who are making you use it to stop it – I will happily provide supporting documents to counter *any* or their arguments about "business" or "security" reasons.
- Just for Laughs -Jean Paul Satre's Lost Cookbook
"Still working on the omelet. There have been stumbling blocks. I keep creating omelets one after another, like soldiers marching into the sea, but each one seems empty, hollow, like stone. I want to create an omelet that expresses the meaninglessness of existence, and instead they taste like cheese. I look at them on the plate, but they do not look back. Tried eating them with the lights off. It did not help. Malraux suggested paprika."

- Tiny Art Director
I make absolutely not comment on any similarities that may or may not exist between the Tiny Art Director and our clients at work. I will, however note that to date, no client has ever requested a "poo-poo airplane" as part of any work I've done.
- Oh, for God’s Sake, Newspapers Should Go out of Business
I know I've linked to similar articles in the past, but I rather like the spin this one is using, and I particularly like the opening paragraph: "Newspapers stopped working a long time ago and a better means of doing their job is readily available. It’s an asinine debate. Who wouldn’t want their news delivered in a form that was searchable, saveable, resendable, which you can talk back to, which is linked to other relevant news, which allows you to read as lightly or as deeply as you wanted to, and which combines text, pictures, and video?"
- Infinite Summer
A challenge: Read Infinite Jest between June and September. I've been trying to do this for years, but every time I have a go at it, I find myself distracted by some other book, and not picking it up again. So instead of treating it like a normal book, and trying to read it to the exclusion of all else until I'm done, I think I'm going to try and do it this way, spread out over a three month period. 7 or 8 pages a day should be no problem, and I can read other books on the bus. At least until I become hooked on Infinite Jest, and feel the need to start carting a tome the size of my head around everywhere…
- BPS RESEARCH DIGEST: The harm caused by witnessing rudeness
Yes: that twat shouting at someone else on the bus really is spoiling your day. Yes: your rude and/or unpleasant co-worker really is lowering everyone's productivity. Yes: Bad manners really are contagious.

- The Problem With Music
Steve Albini's breakdown of exactly how much a band can expect now to earn in a normal record industry contact. Figures would need to be adjusted for inflation, but I bet they're still proportionally the same. I've seen this a few times over the years, I just wanted to log it in case I need to refer to it again.

This will be incomprehensible to non developers in the audience, but oh god, this is so painfully, painfully true.
- Pulse Laser: My printer, my social letterbox
This idea set off fireworks in my head, and I think I've got a spare-time tech project for the foreseeable (I got a proof of concept lashed together in about an hour, but it needs a *lot* more work before it's useable.) I love the idea of being able to get up in the morning and have the overnight reading ready for me to hop on the bus with. Hell, even if I don't ever make the mailbox public, all I have to do is lash it to some RSS-to-email functionality, and presto – a custom POD newspaper every morning.
