The Most Important Scenes from Man of Steel (As I Remember Them) OK, usually snarky internet reviews aren't exactly my thing. (Yes, I know. Shut up.) I sort of feel like the energy used in producing them could be better used elsewhere. But you know what: I enjoyed reading this more than I did watching the movie. (Spoilers all over the shop, if you do click through.)
Is the outrage over Stuart Hall’s 15-month sentence justified? This is an interesting write up. I have been tending to share twitter's outrage at the sentence, but reading this more considered write up makes me wonder about it – not because I think it was fair or right or good, but because it does seem, on the face of it, to have been *just*. Which is all we can, or should, ask a sentencing judge to be.
Adactio: Journal—Battle for the planet of the APIs Superb article on the importance of a technology that most users don't care about, and never use – RSS. It's only really important to developers. But that, in itself, can be indicative. Modified quote: "It might be that RSS is the canary in the coal mine for my data on the web. If [a service doesn’t] trust me enough to give me an RSS feed [of my own data], why should I trust them with my data?"
Using Metadata to find Paul Revere – Kieran Healy In the terribly unlikely even that anyone reading this isn't worried about PRISM, metadata gathering, or the general sense that there's an enormous surveillance state out there that is not your friend, I encourage you to read this.
Map Stack by Stamen This was closed when I went to look at it, so this is a note to remember to look at it properly, because I love their maps -= particularly their toner map in hard B&W. Also, interested in the idea of a web app with opening hours. I quite like it.
My response to BBC Watchdog: A Chrome plugin for Just Eat – Pezholio Proper Good. I don't use Just Eat myself (no special reaosn I just signed up with on of their competitors first), but I love this kind of improvements to service stuff using public data. Mind you the obvious followup (rhetorical) question is "Why weren't Just Eat doing this themselves?"
Designing blogs for readers – Matt Gemmell I am optimistically hoping to move to a new blogging platform before the end of the year. (I may wind up remaining with wordpress a while longer, but a move is at least on the cards.) As part of the move, I'd like to give myself a custom design, and I want to refer back to this post when I come up with it.
Vintage & Retro Childrens Advertising – a set on Flickr I know there are people complaining about Flickr's new look. But I know you're all wrong, and I can prove it, because this page now exists, and it didn't, before the re-design. Seriously, just go and look at it, and think about all the other brilliant and visually arresting pages that have just sprung into existence overnight.
